Among the many successful people one thing I often observe is that they are first true to themselves. Respecting one’s own self is the beginning of a successful journey whether growing in personal or professional lives.William Shakespeare in Hamlet quoted: “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”The same echoed to me last night when I met our energetic, inspiring and visionary leader, Mr. Sajjeed Aslam, currently the Head of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Pakistan in an Annual Members network meeting 2019.Inculcating dignity for oneself has to be developed internally. We can develop this by internalising the belief that we are born to be responsible for helping people and environment around us.Of course, we all have some limitations. But despite this, we are rich in resources that nature has provided us and we can do a lot to create a positive impact in people’s lives and the environment we live in.For instance, the thought that I am responsible for my family, friends and profession gives me this intrinsic sense of value of being true to myself.Once we start believing thus, our lives becomes content, happier and wholesome. We start investing in our education, become wiser and take responsibility for what we are doing. Thus we need to re-frame our minds to respect ourselves first to climb the ladder of success.Mandy Hale once said, “You will never gain anyone’s approval by begging for it. When you stand confident in your own worth, respect follows.”
